i don't think the answer to your question is any ONE fuel.
Vehicles of the future will be able to use several types of energy, depending on which fuel is more readily available to the vehicle.
These vehicles are already in production & research & development & they wear a blue oval.
First Flex-Fuel Vehicles (1995) uses E85 and/or gasoline.
All electric vehicles, currantly being used in California as postal delivery trucks.
First Hydrogen fueled vehicles currantly being tested & used in Florida.
First ever Tri-Flex-Fuel (gas-ethanol-hydrogen) vehicle .Super Chief concept vehicle, 2006
First (and also still the most fuel efficient ) Full Hybrid Escape
It is not the auto manufacturers that aren't producing the alternative fueled vehicles .....it is a matter of FUEL INFRASTRUCTER.
getting alternative fuels to the vehicles that can use them is the #1 problem.
Ford has been working with BP in the Hydrogen fuel infrastructure (storing, transporting & dispensing) catagory & they are testing in California
Ford has also been affiliated with VeraSun (an ethanol company ) in expanding E85 infrastructure.

Until now, there is no really potencial replacer for diesel and Gasoline. These fuesl have proved themselves really ideal for the situation.
Hyrogen is still at too early stages while CNG, Ethanol and Biodiesels need a lot and a lot of areas to be produced.
You would need to plant all the arable lands on earth wth corn to replace the Fossil Fuel, and you would need to plant all the planet earth to produce enough biodiesel.
CNG and Hydrogen are very low in energy content therefore on car storage is still the biggest problem.

The future fuel for cars will hopefully be electric. I think 20 years from now you'll see electric cars that can last 1000 miles between charges and can be charged up in less than an hour. Battery technology is making leaps and bounds. Not because of this, but laptops, cell phones, pda's etc are driving batteries to be better & improving all batteries in the process.
