The best current one is Football Manager 2006
The championship manager series was by far the best, but after 03/04 the makers and producers of the game parted ways (or something) and the people who actually made the championship manger series make the football manager games now, championship manager 5 and onwards are awful compared to football manager.
In my opinion the best is championship manager 2001/2002...crap graphics, outdated database, but it is a great game, and you can get up to date databases from download sites.

Best football manager game is Footba Manager 2006 currently. The new updated game will be available in October FM2007.
Far more indepth than Championship Manager which is the other main player in that category of game.
If your looking for a more arcade type game then look at Pro evolution soccer / Fifa 2007
