As i have seen before on the news, newspapers and some web sites i think you can clearly say that people from Alabama would consider a person he is gay in anyway another kind of race. They speak of it badly and can be called on an extent Homophobes. Grendle speaks of general terms with your question and doesnt really answer you.

Like most southern states Alabama is very conservative in political and religious views. However, there are a lot of open minded people out there too that should not be roped into the mainstream by assocaition.

Not sure what you mean there, pard. Alabama is anti-sodomite, that's fer sure. And I believe they view the transmission of invariably fatal STDs with a dim eye.
But "Incredibly" and "absurdly"? I dunno. Depends on what you find credible and absurd.
See, not every community on the planet has adopted the idea that sexual deviancy is socially acceptable. Some places, when they see two men kissing in public, or groping each other in the park, the normal people are wont to take serious offense, perhaps to the point of initiating activity. These places (and there are quite a few) are of the opinion that deviants should not impose their defect on the public. They feel that folks with, say, half a face, should not spoil their dinner but should wear a decent bag over their heads and stay clear of public eateries.
And to them, those people who proudly define themselves by a psychological illness should be talking to their shrinks, and not to the local city council or newspaper.
It is a proven fact that homosexuality is NOT a "choice", but is an inborn trait, like webbed toes or an extra pinky finger. Nevertheless, it is a defect. By definition, homosexuals are incapable of self-reproduction (one of the defining characteristics for a viable life form, if you recall your biology lessons).
That said, while there is no general animosity towards homosexuals in Alabama and similar communities (except among a certain low-brow caste among the populus), there is certainly no great outpouring of support for them, either.
Sorry to "shorthand" the explanation, here, but I don't have time for a lengthy diatribe right now. Sincerely, I hope this clears it up for you.

Unfortunately, most people in Alabama are ignorant. Churches prey on the ignorant and tell them to believe that being gay is a sin, among other things.

The South kills gay people. Alabama is definitely known for its discrimination, as well as other southern states. Look at what those states did and are still doing to their racial minorities.

Oh Yes. There was a movement that went thru a while back that tried to remove any form of reference to homosexuality outside of medical text from library shelves....

Yes and yes. Alabama, like most of the so-called "red" states, is quite homophobic. The level of tolerance is usually directly proportional to the number of teeth in their head...

I think you'd find that in most southern states.
Wherever you find Baptists and Rednecks, you'll find this type of Neanderthal thinking.
