They don't actually know whats going on, until you tell them. What they do know is what questions to ask to help you to open up to what going on with you. Once you know the roots of your problems, it is harder to ignore them and easier to accept and change them for the better, and that makes most people happier in life. Its only as good as the skill of the psychologist (some are better than others) and the willingness of the patient to tell the truth and open up to what's gone on in their lives. It's a very personal experence and not an easy one to have, so that is why the questions they ask make them seem like they are "know it all's".
Take care

Well, it depends on what you ask a psychologist. Psychology is the study of human behavior and the mind and how it works. I'm sure they do have some answers but I don't believe they know everything. Maybe with their degree they just think they do.

Because most of the time they do. They're trained to learn your thoughts even by your movements and your reactions. They understand how the human brain works and the way average people think.

Psychologists. And that's their job. It's the same reason doctors always think they know what's wrong with you. It's their job to think that.

its because they have to. its their job to, in someway let you know that they can solve your problem by letting you solve your own problem. its what i would call motivation. they act like they know what to do, the suggest something very general and unspecific, then you figure out the solution to your problems...

Because they have to. If not, why should people with behavioral problem go to them?
