Over the last few years there has been a noticable resurgence of Zombie films, especially those produces by the big companies (Dawn of the dead remake, Land of the dead, even Shaun of the Dead) and several more are being produced as we speak.

It got me to thinking to why Zombies are making a comeback now? This is what I think, please let me know if you have any opinions?

The last time that Zombie films were popular was from the late 60's to the early 80's, a time when the western world was terrified of Communism. America in particular was seemingly obsessed with the idea of communist infiltrators within American society "reds under the beds".

Now we live in a time of international terrorism, when people living in our communities; neighbours, friends, work collegues etc could, in the minds of many Americans, be sleeping terrorists waiting their oppertunity to kill and maim.

Both of these fears seem to be the essence of Zombie films, fear of a close unseen enemy.

I think the people that grew up watching the films of 20 years ago want to make films like that and when the few that make it through directions and production school have the money that is what they want to make. To do a better version with the new technology and good actors of what they saw as scary when they were kids. Everything goes in cycles. Also a zombie movie is very close to the idea that chemical warefare could cause an epidemic that made people that way and it's a real threat these days.

Romero's movies were social commentary of their times which is why they worked better than other zombie films. Night was about racism, Dawn was about consumerism, Day about Reaganism and now Land of the Dead is about Bush. the recent British film 28 Days later was about communicable diseases (AIDS?). Whether everytone that watches them likes them for this reason or because they are uber violent is debateable

The Reason is they're all metaphores for the hope of The "Superleague" being resurrected. (Aka SUPERFAIRY'S)

But like the zombie movies, it's just an 80min horror Film.
