The Buffalo Soldiers were black soldiers who were sent to the West in order to fight the Native Americans. Term came into general use after the Civil War. It was first a deragatory term, and came to be considered a badge of honor.

Buffalo soldiers refer to the black soldiers who were in the army fighting along side of their white counterparts, but without the recognition or status they rightfully deserve. This term I believe was coined in the 1860's, or thereabouts.
