I think that it is they are geeky and/or only talented / gifted in one area. That is if they are gifted on the piano, that is the only gifted area in their life. If they are talented in math, they must stink at art. Most of the gifted and talented children I know are very well rounded, and gifted/talented in many areas, which makes them very cool!

That they are good at every thing. There are so many variables. Everyone is different.I am a enigma myself.I was tested and told I had a very high IQ ,Im an artist and I have sold my paintings.Ive also published poetry but Im dyslexic.I couldnt tell time till I was 21.I still struggle with left and right.Im also fluent in two languages and working on a third. Some times people who know me exspect too much of me because they consider me smart. As a child with a high IQ the teachers were angry with me alot. They thought I was lazy.I hated school. In history class i could explain and debate like crazy, however in math class I struggled .Im the only kid I know who teachers wanted to put in both in gifted and in learning disabled classes. In the end I dropped out.I think that schools should be geared more toward each childs individual personality as opposed to everything being black and white.Smart or slow, some children are both.

One that I have noticed: Some people who are said to be 'talented' are seen performing their 'talent' for hours and hours on end, day by day, week by week. That is not talent, that is hard work... Practice makes perfect... Talent on the other hand is where you have a natural ability to perform a task.
A good martial artist may be practicing for 20 hours a week, for the past 5 years. That doesn't mean that he is talented.
Where by on the other hand, someone who picks up an instrument, with a little bit of 'playing around' begins to feel for the instrument and is able to show a quick learning curve may actually be an indicator of a natural ability to create music. Hence talent.

As some others have said, just because a child is gifted in certain academic fields, they are not necessarily gifted across the board. In fact, often, I have found that gifted children are socially lost. They don't fit in with people their own age because they are far superior academically. They don't fit in with people their academic equivalent, because they haven't reached the same emotional level. They often turn inward and don't even try to find a social group, which leaves them alone and awkward with people.

That gifted children have both a high intellect and a high emotional IQ as well, which is not always the case. Sometimes if you have a high IQ you have been set apart from your peers and don't develop all the social skills and emotional skills that you would otherwise develop.

that being gifted and talented automatically makes you good in school. I fell it could be just the opposite causing the classic under-achiever scenario where either from sheer boredom at the lack of challenge or from the pressure of not wanting to stand out from among classmates the student does poorly in school.

That they have no personalities. If people would take the time to talk with a gifted or talented child and interact, they would see that most of them are quite shy, extroverts.

That it's essential for an autistic student to look you in the eye when he speaks. Why do teachers continue to insist on this when they know how uncomfortable it is? Give the teacher aide some credit, maybe she's autistic and no one knows it. "No child left behind' needs restructuring. The teachers resent these children and the aides know it.

that they are gifted and talented in all fields. They should still have a good all round education in order to help them function socially as well as educationally.
