Dhanbad is the headquarter of Dhanbad District of Jharkhand state, India. Dhanbad is famous for its coal mines and industrial establishments. Dhanbad is also called the Coal Capital of India.
The Indian School of Mines located here draws students from all over the world. Central Mining Research Institute, and Central Fuel Research Institute are located here. Agencies like DGMS, CMPDIL, CMPF are there and play wide variety of roles in their respective disciplines to serve the coal industry. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) is also situated here. Dhanbad is the second highest revenue generator for railways in India.
Coal is big business here. Dhanbad has so much of potential(coal wise) that even Tata Sons have set up its mine here under the aegis of Tata Iron & Steel Company Ltd. TISCO has been instrumental in the emancipation of the district especially the tribal regions dominated by the 'Mahto community'. It has even developed small fledgling townships for its employees replete with good roads, water, power & sanitation facilites.
That Dhanbad is developing can be seen in almost all the leading banks have established their presence here. Dhanbad is giving Ranchi and Jamshedpur a run for their money and is leaving them behind in almost all the aspects of development.
The one thing bad here is the level of pollution. Jharia - a town in Dhanbad area is the second most pollutated place in India. Jharia market place is a congregation of small shops with cramped bylanes with drains flowing all over. What's worse is the ground beneath - the underground Coal is on fire. Smoke emanating from the earth is a common sight here. There is an impact of metro lifestyle growing inthis place in last few years.with opening of lavish markets like Sri ram plaza,a shopping mall & an exotic residential complex by the same group, the face of this city is changing.A super market on the location of Mr. Jalan's residence will certainly add another chapter in this context.
Durga puja in whole Dhanbad & specially in Katras is very famous in the state.Karma is a local festival, celebrated by almost everybody:basically,is a symbol of a sister's love and affection for her brother.
Dhanbad ,being centre of coal industry since British Period, has a glimpse of people & culture of almost every part of India. be it Marwaris in Jharia,Mahuda & Katras, or Sardars in the district town,or Bengalis & people from Eastern UP spread equally over the district.Whichever state in India you belong to,and whichever part of dhanbad you visit, you will find people from that place. this certainly is the source of large cultural domain and open heart of this place.
Come ..... its calling
