Is anybody here genuinely affected by it?

I've been in a real funk about it.....can't eat, sleep.....it's tearing me apart!

Seriously.....I think it's a marketing ploy. A bunch of astronomers got together in Enron's old conference room, worried about how they were going to keep drawing a paycheck for essentially not discovering anything since......well.....Pluto.

Anyway, the one with the biggest, gnarliest beard decided that they should create a controversy, with Pluto as the obvious target, and BINGO......back on the front pages. Hermetic stargazers the world over suddenly breathed a sigh of relief....this is good for at least two to three years of argument, and everyone keeps their job.

At which point they'll have to come up with some new theory. How about this....the rings of Saturn are actually celestial Rolaids, keeping the gas giant from expanding beyond the realm of the known Solar System.

Sure, because we are living through history as we speak. I know it may sound silly, but you can look back, decades from now, and now that you were alive when Pluto was reclassified, you lived through 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. These are the things history books will tell our future kids about and you were a part of it all.

Does my world crumble because of Pluto's change? No. I'm not into astrology either but I still think it is kind of cool that we can have enough common sense to recognize the mistakes of our past and correct them. Pluto should have never been a full planet from the start but at least we can recognize that now and make the changes so that future generations can really understand our solar system.

Online encyclopedia wikipedia has already been updated shortly after the announcement, some Science centers have taken down the display of Pluto from their planet models.

Books and other physical media will be outdated, my almanac is outdated. It will be interesting if someone can calculate the TOTAL cost to accomodate the declassification of Pluto from a planet status to a dwarf planet status.

It's going to make a hell of a lot of books and encyclopedias out of date and what are the kids meant to say in school when they are asked to recite the planets. "Well Pluto was one but now its not really one its a dwarf planet" Maybe they should just leave the poor little fellow alone and let him join in with the others instead of making him stand on the side line. Lets hope they don't decide to remove Earth from the list or we are all in trouble.

Hold on. Only 487 members of the organization's 10,000 members met and decided on this. Over 1,000 other astrologers have signed a petition contesting the change and are planning their own meeting to maintain Pluto's classification as a planet.

So, this may end up being another case of the media creating hysteria in order to sell their ad spots. I hope no one killed themselves over this.

Doesn't bother me any either way.

But schoolkids are going to be confused when they're learning it because their textbooks haven't been updated since the decision was made.

As far as astrology goes, that was around long before Pluto was even discovered. So it really shouldn't make any difference there either.

Apparently some people do and are.

Change - any change - is scary to some people.

I don't get it myself.

I'm glad it was re-classified. Makes much more sense given our current knowledge. But any way you slice it, it's just terminology. Pluto is Pluto, whatever we humans decide to call it.
