It was the time when women really proved their worth. They took over the driving of trams and buses, worked in munitions factories, became nurses, some working in the battle fields, some driving ambulances.
They took over many of the mens jobs. It's what helped them gain the right to vote.

Probably good since they got more of a role in life - they helped the war effort at the home front enormously by making planes, parachutes, munitions, etc. First taste of freedom (being out of the house) for many.

What was life like for women at any time in history? It's the same. Horrible working conditions and low wage, chronic illness and death at an early age, ususlly related to chld bearng, physical mistreatment, including marital rape.

My grandmother came out of "service" which she hated and became a bread delivery woman leading a horse and cart around Birmingham to deliver bread to people in their homes. Then her husband was killed in 1915 in the Somme and she kept the job until she remarried in 1925.

It was good, they used to eat their tea and sometimes they work in a munitions factory.
Some removed their vests, some removed their pants.
And some removed some ants from some Geranium plants.

actually altough it was difficult due to shortages and conditions were bad in munitions factories, ww1 brought alot of gains for working class women, such as wages they had for themselves. so there was much improvement.

l would think it would have been very hard, most of the men were away at war, poor health standards, not much money, no health service, childrens allowance.
