if the motor is turning and not starting there is probably some underlying ignition problem. If the engine can spin have someone out back listening to see if they can hear any noise or see any smoke coming out of the exhaust. if they hear noise then there is a good chance the engine is sparking and if they see smoke you might need to advance your timing because the smoke might be coming from un burnt gas due to retarded timing.

Shoot some starting fluid in it. If it doesn't fire, it may be that the timing is off and the computer is restricting ignition. If it fires but shoots out the intake or sounds like backfire, the timing is off. If it runs smooth but dies when it runs out of ether, the fuel pump is not running. Good luck. Do a compression test to make sure everything is right. There are 3 different types of heads for the 2.0. I think the 2.2 is all common without part changes. Good luck.

had a similar problem on a ford escort a long time ago or rather my mate did it spun over over OK but made a farty noise the rockers held the valves slightly open because he did not check the clearances after he torqued down the head bolts I did not notice at the time cos I was busy changing the camshaft on his brothers car although I was also telling him what to do at the same time

as long as you didn't remove any belts i doubt the timing would be off. (I'm not sure how a cavaliar engine is set up...).
so...
prime the fuel lines to get air out of the system.
