I have just reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything I had on before and nothing else. However, I'm finding, in the root directory, sqm files that were never there before. They are sqmdata00.sqm and sqmnoopt00.sqm. Everytime I turn on my computer there are more of them. The 00 on the new files become 01, 02 etc with each new start of my computer. They are only visible with the folder settings set to show hidden folders. What are these files? Where do they come from and how can I stop them cluttering my hard drive short of manually deleting them all the time? I have this nightmare of my hard drive eventually becoming full of these 1 KB files.

Usually this is a registered application type for SQM files as “Operation Flashpoint Mission” (Refer to link - http://www.filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=sqm&Search=Search). But in your case I suspect that you are Using Windows XP with Live Messenger! Am I right? These are some kind of a log files which MS people use to gather information on their beta versions. This may happen if you are using Windows Vista too. Don’t worry; you can remove them safely by deleing.

Sorry but you've got to uninstall ms live messenger and delete all *.sqm files, orelse you'd want to uninstall vista inspirat 1.1 if present on your system, reboot and you'll never have those files again:)

I think it's to do with the storage of memory on the hard drive (clusters). You may need to run defrag to resolve this.
