Hi Declan, don't know much about laptops, but have a 30gb iPod video and had nothing but trouble with it, am big iRiver fan and see they have new video mp3, we have several mp3s in our house, all iRiver and had no trouble with them at all, if buying a new one would consider that and if we are to believe that 95% of mp3s have samsung internals, it also might be worth a look at,also have a look at www which mag & Computer active mag (aug) they are doing a feature on laptops, would highly recommend comp active mag subscription, been getting lessons at £15 an hour and learned far more from that, good luck man.

unless you are on an unlimited budget, or made of money then I'd suggest steering clear of Apple - you pay a heck of a premium for that logo. in my view their is little or no difference in the build or manufacturing quality
consider something form Creative or IRiver look on amazon or advancedmp3players
you get a bigger (admittedly) machine but with better features, more storage, longer battery life. you get something that complies with international standards, you are not locking in anything you records (say music using the apple codec AAC). better yet you aren't going to be stiffed by the record companies imposing their digitial rights management software (part of both AAC & WMA)
You'll probably save yourself anything between £50 and £100 for an equivalent OR better machine
consider spending some of the saving on a decent pair of headphones, and think of all the additional music / video you can buy withe the savings.
Direct experience of Apple & Creative tells me that Apple use the old design trick of locking you into their technology (Remember the battery problem, send your Ipod back to apple to get a replacement battery (creative (slide a catch slip in a new battery (cost saving £50..£80 with the added benefit that you can also have a spare battery), drop you Ipod - ooh new disk sir, that'll be £150..200 notes, creative undo 4 screws slip in a new laptop disk, format the disk with the MP3 player firmware - jobs goodun (saving £125...200) - best of all in both cases the MP3 players didn't have to be sent back to the manufacturer)
in short don't be a victim of fashion - go for a quality creative or similar device.

You'll get a really top of the range laptop for a grand. Make sure its high in RAM in case you want to upgrade to windows Vista later (which I think requires around 1gb minimum). Also graphics are a priority and HDD storage capabilities.
As for a mpeg4 mp3 player, go for an Apple ipod. That do'es all you require and should be around £200-250 with 60gb. Also you know its a big name and has good sound quality.
