I love watching the seasonal changes, looking for the tell tale signs of what we all know is coming.

I can smell it in the air. The wind changes. It feels different, crisper.

The horses' fur get thick and rough and the dogs don't wander off so much from the house.

There's a lot of activity in the woods around my place.
The ring tails are padding their dens.
The deer are moving to safer, greener grounds.
The pair of bears in the neighborhood are fatting themselves up.
Some birds are gathering and making the move south, while others are building up their nests, snuggling in.
Even the wild turkeys seem to be prepping for the long, cold months ahead.

Suddenly the town is filled with pickup trucks loaded down with fire wood, "WOOD FOR SALE" signs hanging off the tail gates.
PG&E trucks are seen more often at the big, silver boxes here and there down the street, checking this and that, making sure a power out won't hit us as bad as last time.
Big boxes of hot chocolate with tiny marshmellow packets replace the big boxes of lemon ade packets on store shelves.
K-Mart's swimsuit sale turns into a winter coat sale... you know the ones with the fuzzy collars and cuffs?
Nights at the club are slower.
The Dollar Tree is stocking for X-mas, even months before it actually hits.
The laundrymat is filled with sweaters, comforters, and full length pajamas.
Football season!
All of a sudden every block has a house making last minute roof repairs.
Gutters are the big buy at the hardware store.

Wow, I like this question. Good question.

We have hurricanes which hopefully pass by but do not hit us here in Puerto Rico. Then the weather cools considerably around Thanksgiving time (end of Nov.)

Winter brings the surfing season to the N. Coast while in the summer, people surf more on the S. Coast.

Interesting question. I would say when the stores start putting out holiday items, and when there are no more boats out and about. I live very near the water.
