I have been told that diesel engines don't wear very well in the long term and also that they are more expensive to maintain. The only diesel engines worth looking at are Audi or Mercedes V8 which have the same economy as a 1.8L Is this all true?`

If diesel engines didn`t wear well trucks wouldn`t be powered by them.....Diesel cars are very economical. 330diesel BMW has a fuel range of close to 1000km on 70 odd liters. 330 petrol BMW can only get around 450km on the same amount of fuel. Same goes for the Merc/ Audi equivalents. Only the fuel system of the diesel can get very expensive if need to replace or repare. But only so on very high milage. Maintenance wise i would say that the petrol vs diesel maintenance expences would not be that different.40% of cars sold in Europe are diesel powered.

My personal experience tells me that diesel is more economical than petrol but more expensive to maintain.

It also depends what you are looking for in a car. If you want a quick car get a petrol, diesel has got more torque but is not as quick.

Diesel engines last a lot longer than gasoline engines, and require a lot less maintenance on them. However if you live in a cold climate they tend to be harder to start and you have to add some additive to the diesel to keep it from gelling.

Untrue, diesel engines get broke in around 100 to 150K miles. They should last around 300 to 500K miles. V8 diesels won't last 500K but they still last a long time. Good luck.

yes diesel engines are a little expensive to maintain because you have to change the air filters more often and the interval between overhauls are smaller but they are more powerful and it is much cheaper to run on diesel almost half as much
