It depends on the context in which it is displayed. The flags of many of the Southern states were changed to display the Rebel battle flag as a gesture of defiance to the Rosa Parks decision to ban Montgomery city busses from forcing blacks to give up their seats to whites. So it is not a denial of Southern pride to remove this symbol from the state flag unless you want promote racism as the cause of the south.

Though the Civil War was not initially fought on the cause of slavery, black culture has come to symbolize the Rebel battle flag as a sign of racial defiance as it has become a symbol to racist groups.

It is an interesting fact that the Emancipation Proclamation (written after the start of the Civil War) only gave blacks in the South their freedom. It did not secure the freedom of slaves in the North -- during the Civil War. As a matter of fact, General Grant had slaves working his farm throughout the Civil War till he was forced to set them free only after the thirteenth amendment to the constitution .was ratified

It has often been argued that the invasion of the South by the North was an illegal invasion of a sovereign nation as the States are only a member of the Union volutarily.

To the winners of wars often goes the slant of history.

It is perhaps more politically correct to display the "Stars and Bars" if you are proud of being "Southern" and you don't want to instigate trouble.

nothing at all is wrong with the St Andrew's Cross, it's what scum turned the meaning of that flag into. Brave men fought and died under that flag, then it was taken over by every hate group you can think of and disgraced by them.

it is about the representation of slavery with the confederate flag.

Do you really need the rebel flag? Does it really describe you, or is it a statement you really want to make?

How about an American flag, in my view the Confederate flag is un American.

But that is just me.
