Some years injuries do a good team in. Often it's the owner or the manager that kill a team. Except for fire sale specials most teams big or small can build a competitive team. Most teams choose mediocre or even completely washed up vets over guys that may not look like the next Babe Ruth but at least you don't know they are going to suck even before the season starts. Lance Berkman is a great example. The Astros for two years had him sitting there in AAA when he's proven he was ready for the majors. Yet they would go out and get subpar players but these sub par players had experience. Well yeah, enough to know they were never going to be a star. The Mariners did something akin to that to Edgar Martinez, Brian Giles is another, the list goes on and on. So many talented players sitting on benches while jokes filled the starting line up.
So it's hard in years like that. Even harder when the kind of players chosen are the exactly kind of player you hate.
In those seasons I hope for a change of ownership and enjoy individual achievements of my favorite team as well as enjoying indivdual achievements of other players I like on other teams. No more stress. You know they'll prob lose the game. Who cares? Thier out of the race. The important thing is are youngsters getting a chance to get that experience, enough to see if they have what it takes? If so then it's far from a wasted season. It's building for the future. If all your guys are experienced vets then it's harder. They just get another year older and prove yet again what they can do on the field.
The Phillies transacted themselves out of contention in the off season. They also have a bad habit of playing the vet over the guy with some real potential. How many times did they bench Michels if he even looked like he'd slump? At least they did move Thome when they found a youngster who could replace him. That at least was a good move and Thome never fit Philly anyway for some reason. When the Phils got him I said "too bad he cant pitch".
Think about it, Hamels, Meyers, Utley, Rollins, Burrell, Howard, Victorino, Rowand, those are all guys who havn't had thier best years yet most lilkely. They are young exciting players who are going to make some noise in the years to come. If the Phils can come up with a 3b and a closer as well as a true #1 starter they are in good shape. Lieberthal looks pretty well done at Catcher also. Might be time to try him at 3b and get a youngster aboard so that Lieberthal can mentor him as he grows into the job. Moyer and Lieberman are almost elible for social security. I wouldn't count on them for much.
So there is alot to watch in Phillies games. Lots of good stuff. yeah they might make youngster mistakes. It happens to the best. Remember watching Baltimore play Texas once in Baltimore. Dempsy was on third and he made 2 or 3 errors that day and he wasn't the only one to make errors. It happens.
