I know in Sherman Oaks, CA there is a place called FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising). I almost majored in Fashion, and that would've been my school of choice. I believe there are 4 campuses in California. See first link below for more info on FIDM. It's an excellent school with a fantastic reputation.

The 2nd link below is a website that has links to Fashion Institutes in all the different states.

Coursework would depend on which field of fashion you wish to pursue. You say "designing." Are you interested in designing textiles? or designing clothing? What about accessories? Any fashion institute you attend should have courses tailored to your particular field of interest. You'll have to contact an admissions counselor to decide on the right curriculum for you. But offhand, I'm thinking you'll have to take courses in textiles (prints, fabrics, weaves, naps, dyes, etc.); tailoring (women's, men's, children clothing?); pattern design (you have to understand all the pieces that go in to a particular item of clothing...they teach you how to fit every type of body, etc.)...just to name a few types of courses you can expect to take.

Good luck to you! As Gloria Vanderbilt said, "Follow your bliss."

If you live in a large city, there is probably a college or university that has a fashion design/merchandising department. Call the schools and ask them to mail a school catalogue to you.
