Hi Lalitha, The first thing that I would do is try to identify the culprits. There are beneficial insects in your garden too. After I have identified the insects, (your local Cooperative Extension office can assist you) I would type integrated pest management into a search engine, and I would read. Plan on devoting a little time on this, and in the end you will have a far greater understanding of the needs of your garden plants in the way of fending off undesireables. Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, is the practice of trying the least toxic method first, as in the case of Japanese beetles, your first step would be to pick them off by hand, dropping them into a container of isopropyl alcohol, or...say... squash bugs for instance, pick them off by hand and search the undersides of the leaves for egg clusters and smash them with your fingers (I do prefer gloves for this) If there are far too many, making it a daunting task, then you move up the line to what works next, but the least toxic of the remaining solutions. I am by no means an organinc gardener, although I do practice IPM. Sometimes you just have to break out the big guns. There are a lot of interesting methods out there, as stated in some of the other answers. One of my favs is hot peppers steeped in water , strained and then sprayed on the plants. Be careful using the tobacco method; some plant families such as the nightshade (tomato, potato and peppers included) are susceptable to tobacco mosaic virus. It pays big dividends to do a little research first. Sevin is a cover all sort of weapon...I think that it may be a neuro-toxin, sounds scary huh? There are botanical pesticides available but bear in mind, they ARE toxic to you too. Pyrethrins come from a chrysanthemum family member, and the derris tree produces rotenone, but they are unkind to humans in the right quantity also. Do a little reading and use your head. The least amount of poison is the best amount.

SOAP AND WATER! Literally. It suffocates all insects. Take a cheap spray bottle, add water, mix in at least 3 or more table spoons of liquid dish soap, just enough to make the water really soapy and spray on any insect. Turn the spray into a stream and even attack outside wasp nests. Soak the insect and in less than a minute they are dead. That simple and SAFE! I keep 2 bottles around the house all the time.

It depends on the type of insect you are trying to kill!

There are systemic and contact insecticides. Systemic insecticides are taken up by the plant and are good for killing things like scale, mealy bugs, grubs, etc. An example of a systemic insecticide is imidacloprid (Merit).

Contact insecticides kill insects as soon as they touch the chemical. It kills things like aphids, ants, beetles, etc. This type of insecticide will not work on things like grubs because they live in the soil and scale because of the protective covering on the scale. An example of a contact insecticide is bifenthrin (Talstar).

Give more information on what your are trying to kill and we could provide more information for you.

There are any number of sprays available. You can make your own by boiling tobacco in water and spraying the "tea" on plants after it has cooled. Don't use the conatainers for food afterwards. The liquid is highly toxic. Keep out of reach of children.
