Their clocks (I undersand they were not mechanical clocks) are generally dated 1284 and 1286 respectively. - any data on first mechanical turret clocks?
Would you happen to have any historical data in this respect at your library.
Also, could you guide me as to which written historic document can credit these dates.
Any additional information you may have on this subject is of course very welcome.
I look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance for your valuable cooperation.

The first mechanical clock of which we have records was made by the Augustinian Canons of Dunstable Priory in 1283. Beeson [33] lists several more: Exeter Cathedral (1284), Old St Paul's in London (1286), Merton College Oxford (before 1290), Norwich Cathedral Priory (also before 1290), Ely Abbey (1291), Christchurch Cathedral in Canterbury (1292) and Salisbury Cathedral some time before 1306. Again, there is no reson to think that any of these had dials, since their main purpose would have been to strike the hours. The clock at Old St Paul's was built by one Bartholomew, called Orologiariusin the account-books.
