I've seen down to jeanpace89's answer, and there's been some misunderstanding in answers - I mean it goes A*(a*), A(a), B(b), C(c) etc. so it's not a confusion between A* and A.
Also, please no more 'I don't know's'...

Maybe, like wheelchairprincess said, for accessibility - and maybe to prevent forgeries. A capital "D" for example, could be doctored to look like a "B", but the little "(d)" next to it will be harder to change.

Or maybe I just have suspicious mind...

Either way, congratulations on your A*!

A* is the highest A grade. Its a bit of a nonsense but when grades fall between certain percentages it marks out the highest achievers. Generally, an A grade goes to you if you get over about 60%. Now if you get 85% should it not be marked as somewhat better? I believe this is basically what A* represents.

Maybe it has something to do with the difference in languages. The second language in America is Spanish.May be the A and a, refer to different terms, and on down the line of the alphabet.

It is so that it isn't mistaken for an A grade which is lower. You must be really clever to get an A it is 95% correct answers, but an a* is outstanding and is 98% correct answers.

The only reason I can think of is if somebody mistakes A* for A (see footnote), but it seems clear enough to me. I think the A*(a*) is just confusing

I think it's an accessibility thing - some people with visual impairments can't read small text and others struggle with allcaps.
