Confident about what?

This is merely playing with concepts, but you may have great confidence in laws of nature but still have very low self-esteem.

But if you use term "confident" meaning something like

"Confidence : 3) The state of mind characterized by one's reliance on himself, or his circumstances; a feeling of self-sufficiency; such assurance as leads to a feeling of security; self-reliance; -- often with self prefixed."

then, by definition, they go hand in hand.

As a sidenote for the previous answer: someone with really low self esteem doesn't believe he / she is good in programming, and thus isn't confident in that either.

The illusion of confidence is the backbone of low self esteem. Many people who are very egotistical have low self esteem. The facade is used to hide the way they really feel.

You can get a good look at a t-bone by sticking your head up a bull's @$$, but i'd rather take the butcher's word for it.
