The proper lava lamps contents are a patented trade secret. This is just because is took so much research to get the correct density and properties of substances to make it work just right.
In essence, the contents can be wax and water, or a type of gel with either water or clear oil.
It's a bit like those games and egg timers you used to get with oil in the water.
Basically, the wax/gel is denser than the water so it sinks to the bottom. On the bottom the light bulb warms the 'stuff' until it's less dense than the water, so it floats. At the top, it cools again and becomes more dense do it sinks, and so on.
As i say, basic elements like wax and water work, but 'proper' lava lamps use oil / gel in the same principle, but with different properties, so they make smaller 'bubbles' etc. If it didn't separate easily, the whole lump would just float and sink together.
Can you tell I like them?

The watery stuff is water combined with some sort of alcohol based fluid and maybe a colouring.
The moving solid is wax.
They both have different levels of conducting heat.
This is why the wax remains solid and is able to move and be moved by the water molecules as they vibrate faster.
