It's not totally lame, but definitely not as good these days compared to the men's ATP Tour. I don't know how you figure most are gay, there's over 1000 players in the WTA rankings, and just because the current world number one Amelie Mauresmo is gay, doesn't mean the rest are. I would expect the % of gay players to be around the same as the general public.

To me the biggest problem on the WTA Tour is that their biggest tournaments outside the grand slams generally have a crap field showing up. As a sponsor putting big money into these, I'd be mega-p*ssed off to have only 3-4 of the top 10 show up. Compare this to the ATP tour where generally most or all the top 10 are entered.

They need to change the rules, to make these more mandatory & perhaps look at their scheduling so there aren't major events in back-to-back weeks. Half the reason I think why players don't show is they need to recover, and don't want to play another 4-6 matches straight after finishing 1 tournament.

It's a pity too that there's no great rivalry as the top players don't play each other enough. In the past this made it interesting, ie. Graf vs Seles, Hingis vs Davenport, the Williams sisters.

And the marketing of the players by the WTA is a bit of a joke, relying on glamour & making the players out to be just pretty dolls, how about they focus more on what tennis they can play. Some of them can actually hit a decent ball.
