I've never picked up a hitchhiker, and never will. But in theory, you bet I'd charge their @ss half the price of gas and tolls! Gas, grass, or @ss; nobody rides for free!

Definitely, it's called interest. The next time the driver needs a lift, that hitch hiker better have a free ride available for both of them. I would say it's like putting on a tab at a bar.

A loooong time ago, my boyfriend hitch-hiked to buffalo and back to see the Grateful Dead. Coming back across the bridge linking the US to Canada he didn't even have a dime for the toll so he had to hop it. Noone stopped him.

I guess they can ask to the nice driver who took them if they could share the price... But if they are on foot... I don't think so !
