Yes we are. I've got 27 Pesetas that I'm willing to give up. It used to be real money

I think we are. Some say that Consumerism is the new religion for the atheistic masses. 'I don't believe in God but I do believe I will feel better if I buy Coca-Cola'. Its very clever marketing that achieves much of this. The advertising companies have figured out that with the decline of religion, people have a spiritual hole, a desire to identify with and be part of something. Just look at the touchy touchy feel good Coke ads with the girl singing, or the GAP ads where everyone joins hands and makes a love train. etc etc ad infinitum. We could do without: Mobile phone ringtones, tamagotchi, Kinder Eggs, plastic flowers, disposable lighters, disposable cameras, cheap giveaway biros, etc etc ad infinitum. And David Beckham. What a ****.

I do think that Americans especially have gotten too materialistic. It seems like everyone is trying to keep up with their neighbors. Bigger cars, bigger houses, cell phones, blackberries, designer everything. I personally think we can do with less. I do anyway. My wife & I have just come through a very tough time financially because of her disability & doctors bills, etc. We found that we were able to live ok with a lot less. It also brought us closer together. Sometimes people let their toys get in the way of their relationships.

I think so, almost everything people own is unnecessary. Happiness has nothing to do with possessions. We do live in a materialistic society though and it is fun to have things. I often think about getting rid of it all, and just enjoying life.

Of course we are. We could do without credit cards and such. I won't have one because I think it creates irresponsible spending. I'm glad to say I don't owe anyone any money at all. We just have to feel happy with what we have.

I could do without most of my posessions, but then I wouldn't have much to do in the evenings.
Mind you, better to spend the money than have it sitting in a bank account and lose a big chunk of it to the government when we die!

I think materialism is the outlet for us to express ourselves in this culture. If we lived in a country that valued the arts we'd paint to make ourselves happy or dance to prove our superiority to others. If we lived in a nation that held religion we'd praise God to feel better and make sacrifices as a measure of our greatness. There's nothing evil about Materialism it's just a conduit of our expressions

Yes, we are far too materialistic. May I suggest you read Thoreau's "Walden". You will understand.

My theory is - The more material possessions/assets you have, the more cluttered your life is. Hence, more stress and worry in your life.
