A young beautiful sweet and caring child at my church is "goth" why would anyone dress so oldly? Is there some meaning to the attire?

Individuals express themselves differently at different stages of their lives, some through their choice of dress, some hair, some others by actions. There is really nothing wrong with the Goth look, any more than the hippie look in my teen years or the spiked green, blue and red look that a few seem to still wear. It is an expression of how they feel at times, and the world is a scary place to some at that age. Hormones, trying to figure out just where and how a person fits into society without getting lost in the process, it can be overwhelming. If the "worst" thing that the young beautiful sweet and caring child is doing is dressing in Goth, let it go. There is NO harm in it, and in fact may be helping to build self-esteem and a better individuality through this stage. Some people put meaning to the attire, but it can be varied, and 90% do it for fashion or just because they feel good dressing that way! (Don't confuse dressing in all black and adding accessories as automatic Goth either - I am 53 and a lot of my clothes are black. I somewhat resemble Goth at first glance, but I am not dressing that way for that reason, so don't always jump to assumptions no matter what the age.) Best wishes.

Maybe she likes the fashion? If you ask her in a non-judgemental way, she'd probably be happy to tell you.

It started out as a music subculture. Then it became white makeup with black/colored hair, black clothing, heavy metal music, act like you're depressed all the time type thing. Nowadays, it's simply considered expressing your individuality so it doesn't have a definition anymore that you can pinpoint.

I like goth girls, has to be a special person and courage to wear goth dress / makeup. I think it's just a way to express that you are different, and I like different.
