The vehicle is a 01' Mitsubishi Montero Sport. The lights inside the vehicle get dim before the shuts off or will not start.

for starters, just because you have a new battery doesn't mean it didn't come off the shelf bad (i know, i've sold a few that were bad in the 3+ years i worked automotive)
next, people on here are just guessing. without seeing the car, hearing the noises, testing your alternator and battery (which most places will do for free or minimal cost) no one can know what is wrong with your car. you need to have it looked at on this one for sure (dimming lights are normally a sign of a bad battery). don't buy any more parts until you know you need them. people can tell you stuff until they are blue in the face, but without at least a starting test (checkers/schuck's/kragen, napa, pep boys, midas, almost anyone can do it and it's quick) it's hard to say. based on just what you said without seeing, hearing, or testing... my money is on the battery. BUT GET IT CHECKED!

sounds like a short, if there is a short in the system and it damaged the battery enough to continue your problem or the belt that runs the alternator might be loose and not spinning the alternator enough to charge the battery. check to make sure there is no oil on the belt or the pulley on the alternator....also make sure the harness that plugs into the alternator is plugged in tight and that all the pins in it are there, if not the alternator won't function properly.

It seems like a short to ground . Could be through starter or positive battery cable. I would check the battery cables first.

check connection to battery..check ground wire...check wires to the starter

It could be your starter that is giving you a problem as well it also could be one of your computer componets...
