Now, as to your question:
You're right, it does seem a tad odd, doesn't it?
We're going through a period now where more bad language and nudity is seen and heard on broadcast television.
I know swearing and nudity has been on TV in Europe for decades, it's just taking longer to get here, that's all.

It is totally bizarre, you've made a good point there. The best American TV is always the HBO shows because- Sex and the City, Six Feet Under etc- because it's a subscription channel and not regulated.
Another thing I find odd is that they're allowed to advertise Viagra on TV. God forbid anyone have sex but if you do, make sure to ask your doctor for our drugs!!!
I read a disturbing article in an American magazine suggesting that the govt manipulated medical research to try and stop the morning-after pill from being available over the counter, and some pharmacists won't fill prescriptions for this, or even regular contraceptives for "moral" reasons.
It sounds like in some parts of the country, you'd be able to get a gun easier than the contraceptive pill.... It's madness.

Because guns are tools. No dangerous than any other tool, it is the handler that is the problem.
Each one has there own role to play.
Foul language is rude. Unfortunately, the social norms have changed to the point women swear in this country. I remember growing up if you swore in front of women it was about the worst thing a person could do.
It is how our society is structured. Unfortunately, we are loosing the sense of shame that we had as a society. The nudity and profanity erode societies standards. The use of firearms for protection and for food there is nothing wrong with, because there is evil in this world and there is nothing wrong with hunting.

My wife and I drove to California a few years ago, from Canada, down through Oregon and into Los Angelos, and we heard that South Central in LA was the baddest part of town, so I drove there, and asked someone which was the worst street, so we drove there too....I was so let down. I felt safe, there were no mean,,black guys hanging around like I had been told....I talked with an owner of a Firestone Tire who had been there for 25 years and never been robbed! I thought we would lose our hubcats in New York minute....but nada...I dont like guns....but in some cases, its safer when everyone has a gun, not just the bad guys!

I'm from the UK and I believe that across the globe - from the USA to Japan and everywhere else - guns should only be owned, handled and used by Military organisations, for example a nations Army, Air-force and Navy.
I believe that only they have the training, knowledge and are mature enough to use and handle guns properly.
I believe civilians are far too immature to handle guns in any situation and that civilians + guns = avoidable heartache and misery.
I'm a civilian and have always been a civilian. I'd like to visit the USA one day and have American friends :-)
I have faith in the British security services :-)
But I'd rather stay clear of civilians and guns whenever possible.

Imagine how difficult it is to explain to our kids growing up! We have to monitor their tv, movies, friends, activities, etc. Gone are the days when you could send your kid out into the neighborhood to play with no concerns...
