I am of the strict belief that there is no such thing as a "stupid question" when it is asked by someone who really does not know the answer and wants to learn. My question is: How many people believe this and how many believe if they know then everyone should know it?

I'm not saying that everyone comes here just to sek knowledge. I understand alot of people come to have fun, share knowledge and/or experiences, or simply to gain points. That is not the question at hand. I'm just tired of seeing people berate other people just because they asked an "easy" question. There are not just adults on here. There are kids here too that just don't know. Why put someone down like that when you don't know anything about that person. I had a teacher in 3rd grade tell me my question was stupid in front of the whole class and I have never fully recovered from that and this is the only place where I fell safe enough to ask questions that some people might think I should already know the answer to.

When someone asks the SAME question that was ALREADY asked and answered.. then it's a stupid question.

I often say this to people who preface their question with 'I know this is a stupid question, but . . .'
I always tell them there is no such thing. It is better to admit you don't know something and ask than try to blow smoke up someone's tailpipe; and I admit this quite often.
Yes, I know some stuff -- you don't hang out on this rock for over four decades and NOT know some stuff. But I don't know everything and I know there are a lot of folks in the same boat that want to learn. I help when I can and ask when I can't.
Usually you can tell on this site if the questioner is serious or just trying to get a rise out of people. Then it's not a stupid question, just inappropriate; which, I suppose, could be considered stupid. But now we're talking about people who aren't serious. If people are serious, then it's not stupid.

There is no such thing as a stupid question. To berate someone for a lack of knowledge with out being willing to share such knowledge is simply wrong. Keep in mind that those who berate others are often imposters and if they displayed any lack of knowledge it would let everyone know the degree of their lack of knowledge.

Well, if someone is honestly seeking information and knowledge, then I agree with you - go ahead and ask. And yes, there are people of all ages and nationalities - sometimes culture and environment affect our knowledge base. Still, some of the questions people post here are pretty strange if not stupid. I don't know if they really expect an answer to some of the questions.

In my house the word stupid is another swear word, I hate anyone to be called stupid. I certainly don't think that there is, such a thing as a stupid question, and to assume that people know answers to quite easy questions just makes an *** out of U and ME.

Well I kind of agree... I think that if someone honestly doesn't know the answer to the question they are asking then it's not really a stupid question if they genuinly want to know... but if they ask a question that is like really really obvious then it's stupid. Also people can ask questions just to be smart alecs and then they're stupid questions too.

I totally disagree ! there are things such as stupid questions ... looks like you haven't browsed enough in Yahoo answers. its different when a person wants to learn something and asks but its different when the person insults or gives unaporpriate comments, without knowing anything.

I agree. I have a friend that's in her late 60's and she will ask people anything. She has a very curious mind and she's very naive so she gets extremely personal. It doesn't bother me. Everyone else thinks she's silly but I think she really wants to know the answer partially because she lives vicariously through others and partially because she's inquisitive.

Having a teachable spirit and a willingness to ask questions is the key to knowledge and understanding. The day you stop asking questions is the day you stop learning. I find that people are quite willing to explain something to me, if I ask. Of course, asking at the right time is important also.

We all have heard it...
There is no such thing as a stupid question.
Stupid people remain that way without asking any questions.

I am with you - if a person genuinely doesnt know the answer to the question then it is not stupid - we are the stupid ones to assume everyone should know the answers to the ones we know as we have all lived different lives
