Glasgow suffers from the same social deprivation as many northern cities, with the unhelpful addition of a dose of sectarianism that dates back to the Irish colonisation of it in the 18th century. Glasgow has suffered badly due to the decline of its industries manufacturing, shipbuilding and as a port. Unfortunately much of this timed with Thatcher's government in the 80's, which did nothing to lift the areas and people most affected out of poverty and to support new industry. Glasgow today is one of the most socially deprived cities in the whole of Europe and there are areas of the city where the average life expectancy is below 60. I have no downer on Glasow at all, it is a victim of laissez faire economics and Thatcher's contempt. Next time you hear someone banging on about 'Neds' just tell them that.

Absolutely nothing that isn't wrong with any other large city !!!
Glasgow is a fantastic place.
Each time I have been there I've loved it. I think it has great architecture and it has a very vibrant feel to the whole place.
Everybody I've spoken to whilst there has been brilliant, the Glaswegians are an incredible humourous bunch of people, they like a laugh and the like having fun.
Many people harp on about how Glasgow is full of down and outs and that it is a horrible place but you can say that about any city in the UK these days, they all have plus and minus points.
For me Glasgow has far more positives than negatives. If I had the choice of a weekend away in Glasgow or a weekend away in London I'd go for Glasgow all the time.
Maybe it's cause my dear Granny, god rest her soul, was born in Glasgow I have this love of the city but perhaps I love it because it's just a bloody brilliant place.

Well for me it's the fact that me and my friends went to T in the Park and some Glaswegians came after us with knives for being English. But I'm sure that it's no more awful than any large city with some run down areas and a large working class population. I think Glasgow has the lowest life expectancy in Britain? and obviously this and crime are both linked to areas with more poverty.
But then on the other hand, I believe it was nominated European city of culture fairly recently? Any city has more good stuff and more bad stuff just because there's lots of people concentrated in a dense area.

I worship the ground that you walk on
give praise to the place where you sit
Your face and the space that you talk from
your teeth and those unlucky lips
I gave you my name and independence
and the best seven years of my life
With twelve months suspended from sentence
and fifty two lovely black eyes
Love ain't like the movies
it blisters and bruises
and knocks you about with its fists
It Leaves you a wreckage
all postaged and packaged
and sealed with a Glasgow kiss
You're as pure as the driven
and I should be in prison
or under a lorry
because I hit you and I'm sorry
But love ain't like the movies
it blisters and bruises
and bites like a dobermann
never home sober and
leaves you a wreckage
all postaged and packaged
and sealed with a Glasgow kiss
I desecrated the ground that you walk on
put nails in the place where you sit
I wasted the space that you talk from
your teeth and those unlucky lips

the culture in glasgow is great. always good bands passing through, night clubs are plentiful...perhaps it's the amount of violent crime that exists there that makes glasgow a mediocre place, to me anyway. but i still wouldn't say anything awful about glasgow. it's just that i prefer edinburgh.

somethings for sure...i know RDT is a d*ck.
Glasgow can seem a bit intimidating to some people at first, but once you've had a few drinks on a friday night, it will probably be one of your best times ever.
Great crowd of people there....only thing is the lack of nice weather.
I was born and brought up there, now i live in surrey and i miss home very much.
No affence to the english, but scottish are alot more friendly

I hear a 'Glasgow kiss' is not exactly a pleasant experience.
Bit like the Chelsea one.
