I think you are asking about the bindi or tika on forehead while some answerers are confusing it with sindoor

---sindoor (vermilion) that truly ascribes to a married Hindu woman-the unassuming red powder that rests in the parting of the hair. And the colour red is associated with power. Sindoor is a symbol of the female energy of Hindu goddess Parvati and Sati.

Conceptually, however, the sindoor (a sign of marriage) and the mark on the forehead are quite distinct.

---Bindi derived from the Sanskrit word "Bindu" or a drop, it is supposed to signify the mystic third eye of a person and therefore, when properly marked, becomes the central point of the base of the creation itself. It is a symbol of auspiciousness, good fortune and festivity.

The bindi mark can have several meanings. Sometimes the bindi is a symbol of religious affiliation (a visible sign of a person as belonging to the Hindu religion), or a mark of a recent religious ceremony; sometimes the bindi is mere beautification, like the velvet patches or beauty-spots worn by well-dressed European women in the 18th century. Even a widow can wear a bindi. She cannot wear sindoor in the parting of her hair.

No one knows exactly when the tradition of putting a bindi started, but since centuries it is seen on the foreheads of Hindu men and women. The bindi worn by the women is made of different substances, whereas the one put on by the men is of sandalwood paste, which is known for its cooling property.
More then their cooling properties, bindis worn by women is also the reminder of their wedding vows, because a bindi is worn by Hindu married women to symbolize their marriage.

Myth also is that it protects them from the bad eye of people

It is called the bindi. Hindus attach great importance to this ornamental mark on the forehead between the two eyebrows -- a spot considered a major nerve point in human body since ancient times. In southern India, girls choose to wear a bindi, while in other parts of India it is the prerogative of the married woman. A red dot on the forehead is an auspicious sign of marriage and guarantees the social status and sanctity of the institution of marriage. The Indian bride steps over the threshold of her husband's home, bedecked in glittering apparels and ornaments, dazzling the red bindi on her forehead that is believed to usher in prosperity, and grants her a place as the guardian of the family's welfare and progeny. The area between the eyebrows, the sixth chakra known as the 'agna' meaning 'command', is the seat of concealed wisdom. It is the centre point wherein all experience is gathered in total concentration. According to the tantric cult, when during meditation the latent energy ('kundalini') rises from the base of the spine towards the head, this 'agna' is the probable outlet for this potent energy. The red 'kumkum' between the eyebrows is said to retain energy in the human body and control the various levels of concentration. It is also the central point of the base of the creation itself — symbolizing auspiciousness and good fortune.

The center point between the two eyebrows is a point which is used for hypnotising a person.

As per Hindu tradition a married woman is not supposed to look at other man. This point is a very sensitive point, and by putting a tilak she is able to control her mind.

And the Red colour is supposed to be a warm colour also enhances the blood circulation in a person. It helps in better sex life.

I suppose ur ? is by forehead u meant sindur in between front part parting of hair. actually it indicates arrival of Lakshmi devi and the girl who comes into her inlaw's house brings different types of prosperity.
Scientifically if ones sees : this sindur has an intricate explanation.
As a human being everyone has daily systematic chores.
Getting up in the morning - starting from washing face, bathing, praying etc. When a husband sees a wife during day time his concentration should not be diverted to night activities. this sindur
diverts his attention by talking to her other things and by concentrating on the sindur that is applied in the center of her parting hair. such things are good for health. Between husband and wife there will be so many other things other than night activity.

But if you have asked for tilak (spot in between eyebrows) it is applied not only by young girls but also by men. This tilak is red
in colour applied by ladies. Scientifically : This tilak is called TRINETRA. Red can be attracted easily,: This tilak (Kumkum) is made of turmeric an antiseptic. A lady works in the kitchen and she sweats perfusely. Generally when we sweat our tendency is to wipe the whole face with a kerchief right. U have seen lifebouy ,dettol etc adv. infection out of sweat. when she wipes her face with saree this turmeric is spread over her face and prevents pimples, acne, rashes acts as a preventive.

Another scientific idea is when one humanbeing sees another they see in the eyes so many different types of languages pass between silence. Concentration is diverted. This trinetra diverts eye contact for married women and the contact is established with threnetra. After reading this pl. notice that whenever others talk to u whether they are seeing ur eyes or any other part of ur body. Then u will realise this. So the elders say that it removes obstracles, bad omen so that the other person whom this person talks will not be mentally disturbed afterall mind is monkey. to be steady and lawful to ones husband and men to be lawful to women india has introduced such culture.

scientific angle eh ? well isnt science vs religion the most debated topic ? anyway , wat i've heard is the spot between the eyebrows is where most of our energy is concentrated . thus, if anybody wants to perform some kind of evil on us , they can do it thru that spot. thus by wearing a tilak (men wear 'tikkas' too!) we are protecting that spot. scientifically, me thinks that spot is some kind of nerve ending , or more so, a hypersensitive spot. so we protect it by wearing tilaks or tikkas :D

do you know that it is said that it's difficult to hypnotise someone having a tilak, all Hindu customs have a scientific background but we don't know them or they are not revealed, but a religious background is attached to it, to make people follow it
