loose filters and plugs won't turn on your check engine light, so that could even be a seperate issue. you can usually rent a scan tool (at checkers/schucks/kragan it's the cost of the tool, but you are fully reimbursed when you give it back) and find out why the check engine light is on - your car's computer stores the reason code. that could also tell you about the oil, but i doubt it. they are likely different problems. afew things to keep in mind - the mitchell manual is what all shops HAVE to go by in the states. so once you find out what the engine light is on for, check that for the time of the repair - usually it is $72-$90 an hour and check the price of the part at the parts counter.
as for the oil, you can try an oil change, that may help or the mech who does it may notice what is wrong. i had a car that had so many leaky hoses that after spending $300 it a lot leaked less, but still leaked, so you never really know for sure until it gets looked at.
btw obnoixiousposter - autozone is currently being sued for doing those tests because they have messed up car computers. if you are going to have your car scanned - have a mech do it or someone who knows what they are doing. parts people are not trained to use a scantool! be careful!

The first and only thing to do is figure out what is wrong way before asking how much to fix. If you ask how much to fix, anybody wanting to take advantage of you will know that you don't know much about your car, and will rip you off.
Firstly find out exactly where the oil is coming from, and by that I mean ask someone that knows vehicles in a mechanical way, or buy a servise manual for your model and workout where it is coming from. After you know this, it will be far easier to figure out both cost and the best way to fix the problem.
Let me try to remotely help you. If the fluid is oil, dark green to black in color and under the center front, it probably is engine oil and leaking from a seal or gasket. If the fli\uid is oil and brown to red in color and in the center / middle (under driver seat on ground) of the car (for front wheel drive vehicles) or near the front wheels on the ground (for front wheel drive vehicles) then it is probably transmission oil. Both these issues can be either cheap or expensive to remedy, so it is important that you get advise from a reputable source. ie; someone you can trust. If you don't know someone you can trust, email me or send another question telling me all that you have worked out and I will see if I can assist further. Good Luck, Regards Tanner.

How much for an oil change in your area, and a gasket change
or maybe whom ever put your oil in last never tightened the plug that is usualy unscrewed to have the oil flow out of the engine.
Check to see if your head gasket is leaking, check to see if your plug is on tight, Most of all check to see if you have any oil before the engine blows... and this is not a good thing either..

A few possibilities:
Loose oil filter
Loose oil pan plug
Failed oil pan gasket
Failed valve cover gasket
Take your car to the place that last changed your oil and let them determine the cause. If you had your oil changed at a place that does not perform mechanical repairs, you may have to drive your car to another location if you need repairs.
Good luck!

i own a repair shop,,and you need to find out what part of the engine is leaking the oil out of it,,there are a lot of gaskets on an engine,,for instance,,if its a ream main seal leaking on it,,it may cost 2-300,, bucks just to put it in,,because you have to pull the motor to do it,,or the transmission,,either way you can get to the seal,,some of the other seals are easier to do,,and you can get to any of the rest of them without pulling the engine some are fairly cheap to do,,but it is important to know which one it is i do this for a living,,so i hope this help,s ,,good luck with it.

Ya know, it could be nearly anything. Maybe a sending unit or a valve cover. Those cars didn't have too many problems. Is it leaving a puddle? If it's just a drip, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it's leaving a puddle, then definitely check it out. Good luck.

The first problem is the fact that it's a FORD
Take it to AutoZone and see if they have FREE diagnosis in your area. They can tell you what's wrong with it and how much to fix.
