After 20 years of smoking, I finally quit yesterday. I have tried to quit before, once using the patch and once using the gum, but both times I started smoking again when I stopped using the nictone replacement. This time I quit cold turkey. was doing okay until a few hours ago, now all I want to do is go buy a pack of cigarettes and smoke one. Did you go through this, and if so, how did you keep yourself from smoking when the cravings got bad?

Best advice I got when I quit--The urge for a cigarette goes away in about 15 minutes whether you have one or not--You only have to fight your urge for 15 minutes and then you have an 'urge free' period. These periods get longer and longer, until finally you no longer crave the nicotine. Also, after you are successful you will feel the most profound sense of accomplishment.

Congratulations!! I quit 10 months ago after 16 years and 30 a day. Yes, it was hard, but determination was my best friend.
I started to visit a smoking clinic. They gave me patches for free. Strong one's at first, then every few weeks they would lessen the dosage. They also measured my carbon monoxide intake. That way, each week, I felt proud to have not smoked because my reading was around 3, that of a non-smoker. My very first reading, 10 minutes after a cigarette, was 87. I was shocked it was so high. After 3 months, my visits to the clinic stopped and I was gradually weaned off patches and I have never looked back since.
My weight has gone up by about a stone, so try to carry on with a healthy balanced diet and not to substitute cigarettes with unhealthy food.
If this is something you really want to do, then you can do it.
Good luck!!

I quit smoking over 25 years ago for about 16 months Then while having a drink I decided to light up just one. BIG MISTAKE! Four months later I quit all over again. Since then I have never taken another smoke again. Mind you...this was all cold turkey.
I know it is hard...I've been through it...you just have to want it bad enough. The trick is to not smoke just one. I once saw a video of a smokers lungs. That did it for me.
It has been proven that smoking is a killer. It just sucks the life right out of you.
I know you want to live a healthy life and it takes MIND OVER MATTER to eventually prevail. Take it one day at a time. Be determined to not let people get rich while you die on their products. I mean the principle alone is worth a winning effort. Be determined to not let them win over you. Let others be that weak...but not you.
Your suscess will also reward you in other ways. You will realize that you are a conquerorand not sheep being led by the blind. You will realize that you have the fortitude to do other great things. You will realize the potential of the power of the mind and you will be less afraid to "Go for it" in other ventures. Take it one day at a time. You and all your loved ones will applaud you and appreciate having a healthy you around. You can do it. You just have to want it bad enough. When you stop your lungs begin to heal right away. At my stage I detest and cannot even stand casual smoke around me.
One other thing...it makes your breath stinks.

I quit for two pregnancies, but as soon as those babies were out, I was ready to reward myself with a smoke. How stupid is that!!! I am ready to quit again...I will start with the patch...but I think this time I will do it in secret...it is difficult for me to feel like everyone is watching me, so if I fail, everyone will know, if I succeed everyone will cheer...I just feel a lot of pressure ether way.
Another part of it, is that I associate a part of my identity as "being a smoker"...when I do quit...I will be a former smoker...and I have not had a lot of good experiences with those types...(they always complain about the smoke like they have never lit up and enjoyed one themselves)...
Sorry I joined in on your parade....some suggestions relative to your question....when my mom quit, she went to a hypnotist and chewed on toothpicks...other than that it was cold-turkey

Try this site...I am not going through what you are but I will be. I started smoking when I was 21 and I'm 25 now. Only I didn't pick up a package of cigarrettes...I picked up black and milds and I have tried to quit so hard and can't kick the habit but I told myself when I get pregnant...I'll stop. Mostly for the baby's sake so I have a good reason...like my own lungs aren't important, right? I guess I'm more willing to save a little one's lungs than my own. Good Luck!

I personally think the only way to quit smoking is to make sure you are making the choice to never smoke again. Otherwise, nothing you do will work. Just say, "No more smoking." Then turn your back and walk away and never think of it again. You probably won't even have any nicotine withdrawal if you let your mind take control.

just through the simple realization that cigarettes are destroying your body, and decreasing your life span.
in exchange for a few days of stress and cravings, you can live a longer and healthier life.
so whats it going to be... lack of willpower over a tiny little tube filled with addictive chemicals?
or smashing the tiny little (yet expensive) box and taking control.
stop letting the tabacco companies separate you from your money and your health.

Kinda imagine it received't workout habitual except she provides it up. i don't believe of i'd have topics with someone smoking round me yet i don't believe of i'd favor to be round them too frequently; i imagine you'll locate she's type of dorky on pot. it may be like courting someone way youthful who would not understand your song. even with the undeniable fact that, i also will say I have considered a minimum of one courting, actual between 2 gay men, in which the guy who had given up smoking finally all started in with the different almost continuously via an extremely demanding concern. you may ask your self when you're executed with pot for good and when you're hostile to ever taking it up back even quickly, because there may also be the prospect including her that which could ensue. this is a good question, yet I have a tendency to imagine this is like asking of your self if the guy you're taking to the Christmas get mutually will be presentable sufficient to introduce on your employers. lol
