before you shut down any processes how about going to trendmicro.com and checking for viruses and spyware. It's safe, easy and it cleans it all up for free. stops the lagging and all that and you don't have anymore problems until you go and get yourself more problems. also pcpitstop has proven to cause alot of computers to crash, i wouldn't reccomend that to anyone. anything that says pc something don't use it. umm the disk defrag and cleanup are good ideas too. Hope you get it all running nicely again
Peace.

If you shut off every process but explorer.exe, Windows may run, but very little else will. You need to do a virus and spyware scan first. Then check your task bar next to the clock to see if unnecessary programs are starting. Close them if you don't need them. You can also go to Start...Run..type in msconfig..and click the Startup tab. See if there are any unnecessary programs there you can uncheck. If you uncheck something it ends up you need, just go back an recheck it and try another one. The computer will have to restart every time you make a change.

Also, consider memory. If you have 128 or less, consider upgrading to 256 or preferably 512.

I'm not sure how to answer that b/c I don't know what all you are running. Try defragmenting your computer and doing a disk cleanup. That's under All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools. Also visit www.pcpitstop.com. It's made to fine tune your pc and make it faster--and it's free! You should download something like Adaware or something to delete adware and spyware out of your system. That'll cause it to drag bad. You can find a lot of useful tools to make your pc faster at www.freecreed.com. Check it out. Hope this helps.

Try running a adware scan first. Use Adaware or Spybot Search and destroy to get rid of all the spyware you're picking up.

first of all, what is running? how can someone answer a question like that when they don't even know what's running?

First, try and defreag your hard drive, and get several GBs of info off of your coomputer.

I just did a fresh re-install a week or 2 ago after using my computer for over a year, and it is running sweetly again.

ctrl + alt + del.. hold them all down at the same time.. then when the little window pops up click on the tab that says "Processes" look for what processes are running and click "end process" on whichever one says "not responding" or which ever one that you suspect is causing the problem

Run a virus scan first. That is a common cause. Go to www.trendmicro.com and look for "Housecall". Let it scan your system over night when you aren't using it.

Click Start
Click run type in MSCONFIG and open it up. Go to start up and unselect that which you don't want starting up when you start your computer. You can unselect anything that starts with C:\ProgramFiles, then restart your computer, it will tell you that start up has changed, click don't show me this again then click on ok.
