What you will need to do is get hold of the IMEI number of the phone you have lost, and report this to your mobile phone provider. If it is a contract phone that you have then it's more than likely that they should be able to pull up the call history of the last calls you made from that phone - and from there they can obtain the IMEI of the phone it was made from.
This is called "blacklisting" the mobile. Once this has been done the phone would be rendered immobile - meaning that nobody could use it to make calls, receive calls or anything. It would be a wiser idea to suspend the line as well, making sure that no calls would get made from the line. In some cases the sooner you report it being lost the better it would be for you financially, because the longer you leave it - the bigger the chance of calls being made - and you would be liable for the cost of said calls.
