Smell is made of molecules of something (pollen, perfume), floating in the air.
Our nose contains millions of receptacles with the shape of these molecules (many different).
Once a floating molecule enters your nose and fits exactly into a receptacle, it triggers a nerve response that says "I detected smell of..." to your brain.
So it is physical: it is a molecule.
So it is chemical: there is a reaction in the nose, that assimilates the molecule and reset itself ready for another time.

Yes, smell is actually tiny particles the olfactory glands of the nose detects. That's why its gross when you smell poop. There are actually tiny poop particles floating in your nostril. yikes!
