unfortunately we are a country who is spoon fed information and most people take it as gospel. As for your question on Africa I would have to say it is once again our media portraying Africa as a poor country. National Geographic only shows dirt villages and people running around naked. Then of course our own media shows us only the slums and poor areas of the major cities. We even see commercials for starving kids who needs our 17 cents a day. So lot of Americans trust what they see or are told instead of doing a little research and finding out that Africa just like America is a diversified country with all ranges of economy. Hope this answers your question....

People over here are not taught! That's the simple answer. Our school system does not go into the details of other cultures and countries. We only see commercials and documentaries on the third world parts of the world to give is information. Our education is lacking.
Would you be suprised to find out that I'm 28 and only a few years ago after doing my own research I found a lot of unbiased information about Africa? And I met an online friend who lives in George. She's caucasion. She has a British accent. She goes to college. She comes from an affluent family.
People are just uneducated, to be honest. Some of them are also racially biased. It's a mixture of things, but I assume they just don't know any better, and don't seek to find out the truth!

Yup. You are right, it is because of what the media shows us; because we have no other way of gathering the information about other countries. But I myself did think that Africa kids were poor and useless, but then in high school I met some kids that were from Africa and they thought me so much. First I was scared of them cause I thought they we infected with diseases, but I found out as you said, human is human, and they are actually really cool, nice and very smart people!
But I really don't think America can change their beliefs fast because everyone has come to think of Africa and africans as the sadess and poorest country there is.Yet, don't worry because the smart ones are learning the truth about Africa and maybe someday, our thought will change on the topic.
Lets Keep Our Hopes Up!

The same can be said for other countries as well. I've traveled to Europe and most European's think American's are "cowboys" or we live in Beverly Hills earning a million (or more) dollars a year. They see what television says America is and don't know anything about the majority of the American people. That's one of the reasons people in other countries dislike us so much. They never see true Americans; they see Hollywood and politicians, which I think we can all agree, is not an accurate portrayal of Middle American society.
Every country is guilty of stereotyping others by what they are shown by media outlets or told by their governments.

Media does form ideas about places. Even different regions of the U.S. have ridiculous ideas about each other from literature(sometimes over 80 years old) or TV in this the age of information people must look for answers not just wait to be fed a convenient story.

great question and i think you pretty much answered it. a lot of people rely on TV and media for their informations. so when there are advertisements that pop up about donating to Africa because the children are all dying...everyone assumes that all of Africa is that way. it wouldn't take much research to discover that that is not the case, however most don't do that. i would say it is a combination of laziness and naiveness. good question!

Well I can tell you what I think based on my experience in the American school systems. We simply are not taught that much about other countries in regular school (K-12). We are taught to be very egocentric...yes we do study different wars and history..BUT only how it affected America. Once I went to college and started studying Political Science, I learned so much more about other countries. I wish it were different, but unfortunately, yes..we are ignorant.

there are so many foundations trying to make a buck off of a situation like that , that is what we see on TV , refugees, kids with no cloths , no food , no parents , no education so Americans send money to these foundations and it seems all you see are more commercials . ld like to see it get where it was sent ,nobody deserves to live in the situations they project across the TV screen
