What is the purpose of releasing the BOW gas?

I played the games a million time and the only difference I notice when I release the gas is that the zombies beome naked and the lickers turn grey.

When turning on the Anti-BOW gas, there is something you should know. If you turn the gas on in the first scenario, the humanoid plants in the second scenario will have a red tinge to them, which makes them poisonous and even more dangerous. I also think that the gas is to make the plant things easier to kill. I could be wrong here...

It's actually not BOW gas; it's anti-BOW bombs that you activate.
BOW stands for Bio Organic Weapon. Thus, since the zombies are bio organic weapons (in a sense), it should destroy the zombies.
