All the forces acting on a body can be represented by one single force. This force is known as the resultant force or the net force.

Let's say you are pushing you're a barrel of leaves across the driveway to the leaf pile

You pushing is the Applied Force.

The driveway and barrel have friction between them, causing a force against you're pushing the barrel.

Net force = Applied force - Friction force.

There are many examples of this, and often times you have to calculate the Net Force in the y-direction and the Net Force in the x-direction, then find the total force in the direction of motion.

for example if there is a chair and someone is sitting on it. the forces on the chair would be gravity itself (weight) and the force of the person sitting on it.

For example for a body rest on a table,
Summation of all forces along x-axis = 0 taking --> as positve
simillarly summation of all forces along y-axis=0 taking |^ as positive
therefere, EF(x)=0 (-->+)
since there is no forces along x axis
and EF(y)=0 (|^+)
i.e., R - W = 0
where R= normal reaction and W = mg = weight of the body
so net force on that body will always be zero if it is in equillibrium position. if it is in motion then EF(x) = ma(x) and EF(y) = ma(y)
where a(x) and a(y) are aceeleration of that body along x and y direction respectively.
note: E is taken as symbol summation and
(-->+) and (|^+) is taken as direction of forces.
