the easiest way is to picture a number line
example:
-10 -9 -8 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
Of course your numbers are bigger - but bear with me.
To add a negative number you are actually subtracting. find your starting number on the line. Since you are ADDING a NEGATIVE you will move to the LEFT that many places.
so for 2+ (-4) I would start at 2 and move to the left 4 places and end up at -2.
It also works if you start from a negative and add a negative.
for -3 + (-4) I would start at -3 and move 4 to the left to -7..
A short cut for a number MINUS a negative is to make them both plusses. so 4--3 is the same as 4++3 (and you can ignore the second plus sign) Using the same method as above if you are SUBTRACTING a NEGATIVE you move the number of places to the RIGHT. so 3--4 I would start at 3 and move 4 places to the right to 7.

If you are adding to a number that has a negative value, you are essentially subtracting.
But how do you subtract a bigger number from a smaller one?
Example: 4+(-5) = 4 - 5 = is the same thing as 5 - 4 so the answer would be 1, except in this case the larger value is negative, so the answer would also be negative.
Another example: 9 + (-13) = 9 - 13 = -4
or: (-2) + 21 = 21 - 2 = 19
If you are subtracting negatives, you are basically adding them together, but the answer will be negative.
Example: -4 - 4 = -8
(could also be written as: -4 + (-4) = -4 - 4 = -8).

2. -57 --57 = -57 + 57 = 0
(Two Minuses Make a Plus)
3. [(-3/5 x 2/2) + (-3/10) + (-1/2 x 5/5)] =
[(-6/10) + (-3/10) + (-5/10)] =
[(-6-3-5/10)]

= 18.3 + 30.7 + (-20.5) + (-8)
= 49 + (-28.5)
= 20.5
7. -57 -57
= -(57+57)
= -114
8. -3/5 - 3/10 + (-1/2)
= (-6-3)/10 + (-1/2)
= (-9/10) + (-1/2)
= -24/10
= -2(2/5) OR -12/5

think of a POSITIVE number as money that you HAVE in ur pocket
and a NEGATIVE as money that you OWE
so let's try this problem 56+ (-89)=
so remember NEGATIVE is money you OWE
so you owe ur friend 89 dollars : -89
remember POSITIVE is money you HAVE
and you have 56 dollars in ur pocket: 56
if you give ur friend those 56 dollars :56
you'll still owe (negative) him33 dollars (-33)
56+(-89)= -33

pos + pos is pos
pos plu neg is same as subtracting neg from pos
pos minus neg is same as adding the two pos forms
neg plus neg is neg , just add the two numbers and put the neg in front
neg minus neg means make one pos and follow above rules
