India, as it is today, is undoubtedly a global power. Although it's prowess is felt in smaller quantity in terms of economy, trade and business. In military terms it's a power, though it's always challenged by internal and neighborhood threats.
India is a living anarchy, and with such a huge population...where population itself will become a problem and not a resource...it is not likely to become a superpower. It will take immense political/national will to not letting that stage come where population will be a resource and not a problem in itself.
Although with a big educated population we are emerging as a knowlege superpower...it's also a fact that a large section of our society remains illiterate, poor and starving.

(you can develop your assignment on these lines.)

Yes, but they first have to come to terms with there society social problems.
Rich and poor. With no social programs what so ever to take care of the poor. India will still have internal turmoil within there society.

Interesting story on this in the New York Times today. Short answer is yes, but not quickly, and not without investing heavily in their infrastructure.
