I chose to get an IUD because my period was too painful to deal with and the fact I tired most of every type of birth control available and disliked it. I had the Mirena IUD inserted. My IUD insertion was very painful (I have never had a child and I was on my period at the time, plus it depends on the amount of pain you can withstand). They told me the process of the IUD insertion, which is, measure the uterus (to prevent it from poking the wall) and then they put the IUD in. It was painful to a part where they had to completel stop and take all the stools out of my vagina (one to open, something ti dialate). I end up crying because of the pain. I really wanted the IUD to be inserted so I went and had it done a 2nd time. They measured my uterus the first time so all they really had to do was to insrt it. When they were doing that I was just in a lot of pain, took a lot of nerve to with hold the pain and have them insert it. When they were finished I was cramping really bad and sweating (almost passed out).
They RN's said that most women who stop the 1st time decide not to do it again because of the amount of pain or they recieve the IUD and they decide to take it out because of the cramping. THey also stated that women are more likely to have the IUD come out if they had not had any children, and the re-insertion process is just as painful. It also depends on the amount of pain you can go through. For me that was really painful. Good Luck.

I've had mine since February. I have no children, and it was not inserted during my period. It hurt. Most doctors put it in during menstruation because the cervix is already a little bit dilitated.

It hurt, but it's not unbearable. I think it's totally worth the pain.

Some doctors use a lidocaine spray to numb the cervix. I didn't have this, but a lot of my friends who have iuds say the spray burns.

After, I cramped for a few days. I spotted on and off for about six weeks. My periods are almost nonexistent at this point.

I took some pain medication before I had it inserted so the cramps were very mild. I had mine done at 4 wks post-partum. YOu can also have it inserted after 2 false negative pregnancy test and no unprotected sex for the past 3 weeks
