The importance of swimming is so a person will know what to do and how to react if they fall into a body of water. Lets say there isn't a lifeguard or anyone around if something like that were to happen... if you know how to swim, you have a better chance of getting out without harm.

No matter where you live, you risk the potential of trouble around water unless you know how to swim. The stronger the swimmer the stronger the chance of survival. Whether it's a freak flood, lake, river, stream, sea, ocean, or pool, if you don't have basic swimming skills you could easily drown or cause someone who is trying to save you to drown. If say you like to hike in the mountains, a slip off a cliff, a wet rock, just about anything can send you plummeting to your death (by drowning) in a river or pool of water (such as the base of a water fall). I have heard of countless reports where a swimmer was trying to rescue a non simmer and was able to, but lost their own life.

While even the most basic skills is good, it is best to develop and practice until you are considered a strong swimmer (able to swim distances and for long periods without getting tired) reason is that in the ocean only a strong swimmer stands the chance of survival if caught by a riptide, or under current. An undercurrent can take you out to sea very far and if you aren't a strong swimmer, you won't get back.

The bottom line is this, if there is a body of water to be found, an accident is waiting to happen and the rule of thumb is only the strong survive. In the instance of a water accident, the strong is a strong swimmer.

Swimming is great exercise. You are much lighter in the water, so for example say you were running the mile in school. You can run for few minutes, and most likely will get tired, or start to feel it, but in swimming, you can move your legs in a fast motion, and will not feel it for hours. It burns calories, and is considered one of the best exercises. It does not jar your joints like basketball, jogging, or tennis. Unlike golf and bowling, it keeps you moving for a length of time, rather than having you expend energy and then rest. This is important for cardiovascular fitness in that it allows one to pump blood and oxygen more efficiently. Swimming also exercises both upper and lower body muscles at the same time, something that some other sports do not do, and it burns 350 to 420 calories per hour.

Importance of swimming is as obvious as the importance of any excersise or sports. It is not only useful to develop your physique, but also for your social and psychological development.Because: (i) you become more confident of yourself due to the swimming skills aquired by you through hard work and sincere efforts, (ii) you can enjoy swimming at beutiful beaches whenever you visit them, (iii) you will not be "an odd man out " when people around you know swimming and enjoy swimmiing ( enjoy even talking about it ) (iv) you can save or protect yourself, if you are in any trouble related to waters , or at least will not feel gilty of becoming a liability or being at the mercy of others on such occasions, (v) you can even become a valuable member of the society in some rescue operations or disaster management programmes, related to floods or so, and thereby feel happy for doing some really good altruistic work, (vi) moreover, if so desire, you can make a career out of it, by becoming a profesional swimmer or a trainer, and feel great by helping many people to learn swimming, (vii) or earn extra bucks by becoming a coach to those who want to learn swinning, (viii) above all its a great fun to swim.

Isn't it enough to prove the importance of swimming, both for egoistic and altruistic reasons?

DO NOT put in another tampon. There are SERIOUS, deadly health risks associated with leaving a tampon in for more than 4 or 6 hours. My suggestion would be go see a doctor and skip the pool party. You can never ever be too safe. If you really want to go to the pool, wear a pair of cute shorts over your bikini bottom in case you have any leaks, and just put the pad on. It will swell, but no one will notice it over the shorts. And being in the water slows your period anyway, so it shouldnt be too big a deal. But seriously, conisder going to see a doctor about the tampon. Feeling lightheaded is not a good sign. Please don't use them overnight -use a pad!! ** if you are worried about the pad swelling, put on a Lightday instead. Thoe really thin pantyliners are great for light flows - the water will stop any heavy flow anyway and the lightday will catch anything, and the shorts will hide any leaks!

When I was young and lived next to the sea, we were always advised not to go in 'over your debth' - chest high. We learned to swim of course but still stuck to the rule. It was also said in those days that the fishiermen in the West of Ireland did not learn to swim as it 'prolonged the agony'. However, in this day and age, I would strongly advocate that children be taught at an early age to swim and to do life saving techniques.

its an amazing sport that will keep you in shape, and your health in good condition. After people break a bone, they are usually incouraged to take lessons in the water to heal faster. Swimming is fun, and you need to take lessons to prevent you or someone you are with from possible death. Swimming is very relaxing, and calms you down. It is also one of the only sports that you can do practially your entire life.
