You also have to ask yourself:
"Is it worth the extra cost to MAINTAIN an apple/macintosh PC?"
That's right, Not only are they slightly more than your basic PC, but they aren't cheap to fix. With a PC, you can do a lot of the repairs yourself, even if you buy from a retailer like HP or Dell. Not so with Apple. A lot of the hardware is proprietary making it difficult to do the repairs yourself, and eliminating the option to buy from 3rd parties.
Aside from the cost factor, there's also the question about performance. Apple workstations use the same CPU as many PC's. Therefore, you can expect similar overall performance. A couple months ago, Maximum PC magazine took one of the newest Macs with an Intel CPU and loaded XP. Benchmarks showed that XP was able to run applications faster than when they were used under the Mac OS X.
On the flipside, OS X is nice to have for first-time PC users. It's easier than Windows to learn and customize. Some of the Mac-friendly audio/video editing apps are designed with that in mind too, giving a newbie the ability to learn powerful tools quickly. Another bonus is that Macs have less issues with viruses and spyware, since most infections are written to target Windows (though that may change in the near future as Macs grow in popularity).
With that said, everything else is in Windows favor. If you can stand the extra startup and maintenance costs, Macs are a decent alternative.

Actually, Macs are very close in price or better than comparably equipped name-brand PCs. Don't forget that all the consumer models have remote controls, built-in wireless and Bluetooth, and the laptops and iMac have video cameras.
What sets the Mac environment apart from the Windows environment is the user experience. Everything from the screen layout to the file system is more logically arranged. You start your favorite programs with one click, including the control panel. The suite of "iLife" programs (music, photos, video editing) comes built in and fully functional. Microsoft Office (not included) is fully developed for the Mac, there aren't any important differences from the Windows version. And the new Intel-powered Macs will actually run Windows (not included) if you have to.

it depends on what you need your computer for and what you like. I personally am a mac person. I like the ease of their systems and that I don't have to worry about viruses or other things. If you are not going to do anything but word processing then a windows machine may be ok for you, but if you want to do anything having to do with graphics or design, or even pictures a mac is specifically made for that kind of work.

Mac does not crash/hang/irritate you like windows.
It is worth it. It is said that if a user once uses Mac OS never comes to windows again, (except for playing games). Games are limited for Mac.
