is there any such thing as an "original" thought?

They do form their own opinions, once they hear a positive side of an idea or issue. It is when we hear negative sides that cause us to repel or avoid listening to someone. It can be disturbing, though some hear them out to let them vent.
If it is a belief, some people can be inspired by someone who gives accounts of how their life has changed since they have opened their heart to that belief. That may not be an invitation to follow them, but just a sharing of how that belief has restored their soul.

People do form their own opinions and beliefs
Now my question is why can't people stand by their opinions and beliefs and still be open minded to what others think and feel?

What would you say is the basis for society? For my money, the answer is shared language culture and beliefs. What do these three things have in common? Ideas. Shared ideas.
In order to convince you that that four legged flea bag over there is a dog, I have to teach you the word dog, indicate that that word is associated to the animal, and get you to agree with me that dog means that animal. If the two of us wish to eat at the same dinner table, I have to convince you that eating with your hands while picking your nose is inappropriate, otherwise, even though you may not be offended by it, I would be unable to finish my meal. If I love you and I want you to go to heaven when you die, I have to teach you about the bible, convince you that the words are true, and get you to accept Jesus as your savior.
If I failed to convince you of any of these three ideas, we would be unable to communicate, share the same dinner, or feel comfortable around each other at times of religious importance such as saying grace or praying for the loss of a loved one.
We share ideas and beliefs as a common foundation from which to build society. If everyone thought for themselves and formed their own value systems how would you ever be able to approach anyone without the fear of offending them or becoming their victim? You can form your own opinions and beliefs, but you have to mold them based on societal norms and the opinions and ideas of those around you or you just won’t be able to fit into society. Just ask Charlie Manson. He will confirm this.
This is just my freely formed opinion that I believe in.

From the time we're born, other people's ideas are pressed upon us. No matter what anyone believes, unless they're certifiably insane, there is going to be someone else in the world whose beliefs are close to identical.
That said, I personally think the best thing to do is look at other people's ideas and make your own informed and personal decision.

Thats a very good question!! I have often wondered that myself.
I believe that some people think there head would explode if they was to ever have a intelligent thought of there own.
People shouldnt be afraid of asking questions and going against the grain. Just because " Johnny Know It All " says so, that doesnt make it right.

Because it is the easy way out of having to think in life. To think is to take risks and show emotion and feeling that some people are just too scared to experience. People have let something like life become too complicated and overwhelming to use their own brain.

Yeah I am trying to raise my 3 kids with the concept of having your own opinion, I think that alot of people are born with their own opinion but then adults who have broken spirits come along and ruin that.

Its the same thing when people claim anarchy. Everyone conforms to something. Whether or not we like to admit it. We all have some opinions that are the same. As far as people who just agree to agree. They are nonconfrontational. Thats the way they are. People should be more concerned with themselves than what other people think.

Your seeking chaos? If everyone had to live totally self-suffienct lives they would never be swords or electricity, or radio waves thus no computers and no internet. We have found somehow that working together, shareing common thoughts and goals we acheive wonders and you wish to live without shareing?

If you take an others idea, it is their idea not yours even if you believe it, your given information so you can develop what you believe using everything you know.
You can become a robot or a person based on how you use what you believe.
