One said that if he were to choose to save a dog or a baby, if it were a smart dog and a retarded baby, he'd save the dog. Is this kind of mentality fair, balanced, and correct?

Why, Homie, that is an excellent question. :)

I'd go for the baby but I did put it in perspective once... if I had to leave town because of severe weather or some other warning and I didn't have room in my car for my dog AND my baby's toys (I don't have any kids...hypothetical, of course), I'd be leaving the toys behind. Some people got upset with me over that.

My pets are very precious to me. They've been with me through a lot. They aren't humans and not more important than human relationships but for some people, animals are the only thing in their lives that seem to love them so it might be understandable for someone to choose an animal over a human.

I'd say that person was a bit imbalanced but it's hard to know what relationships he has in his life that would cause him to answer that.

Oh hell specific. I additionally think of they seem to be somewhat humorous, extraordinarily their television stereotypes, and much extra so while those stereotypes mirror what you notice in actual existence. occasion: loopy cat woman. warm woman; freaky obsession with animals. yet specific, they're so annoying. yet another element: animal checking out is justified in that human beings decide to stay extremely than to die and as a result want animal checking out to be certain what's physically powerful and what isn't solid for drugs given to us. i might commerce a one hundred horses/rats/canines/cats/ for one individual, its in basic terms stupid what the animal fanatics say.
