I have an account with Washington Mutual in the US. How much do British banks (specifically HSBC, but others if you know) charge to use their ATMs - to make withdrawls from a foreign (Washington Mutual) checking account?

Many Cash Points (ATM's) (Including HSBC, Barclay's etc.) that you find off the sidewalk do not add a charge in withdrawing money from their machines if you have a UK account. Some ATM's in corner stores will charge you, though, I think 1.50.
You will need to check with your bank, Washington Mutual, how much they will charge for taking money out of a foreign bank.

Most ATMs (we generally call them cash machines) are free to use, but your American bank will probably charge you for each transaction in a foreign currency (i.e. the pound), so you'll need to check with your bank first.

if taking money out of an ATM, apparently the rate charged is the national exchange rate. That's what i've been told, but not a 100% sure.

ATMs are free to use but not sure about withdrawals from foreign accounts.
