They will mess up the hormonal balance in your body once you get off the birth control. If you're using them to keep from getting pregnant, you might want to just use condoms and stuff like that, nothing that has to be taken internally. If you're taking the pills to help regulate your period, your best bet is to get off them and take an herbal remedy such as Chaste Tree Berry extract (aka Vitex on some bottles of it). The best kind to take is the liquid form, not the capsule ones. It'll take awhile before you notice any results because it works gently. (It's the strongest female hormone balancer, but works gently) So you don't have to taste it, you can just use the dropper to put some in an empty capsule which you get at health food stores.
Also, even though I said Vitex is good for regulating your period, it's also good for using when you get off the pill. Vitex basically is a hormone balancer. Hope this helps. =)

Also, since you said you get low iron, may I suggest Floradix Liquid Iron? It's non-constipating and tastes pretty good. You can take it by itself or mix it in a half glass of juice, which is what I do. Plus, you're period's gonna go nuts once you get off the birth control, and it'll only get worse the longer you stay on it. But if you need to get your period going, Blue Cohosh will help, and when your period's too heavy or going on longer than usual, take Periwinkle. That periwinkle was a lifesaver... lol

the nuva ring (I have no experience with this tho)
Depo I advice staying away from I hated it had horrible side effects
Patch Due to having 1 high dose of hormones to last you a week gave me strong side effects
Mirena IUD I love it Ive had it now 3 years I also had mild cramping and some spotting but that was it! I cant feel it nor can my partner. I haven't had a period or seen blood down there in almost 3 years. I strongly recommend it all the women in my family are now on it! If you don't have children I wouldn't recommend it BC it can cause fertility problems when removed. Ive never heard of anyone having these problems but it is a risk given in the website

Why are you scared of an IUD? I have the Mirena IUD and LOVE it. When it was first put in I had some mild cramps (I've had period cramps hurt worse) that lasted maybe half a day. Since then, we havent had to worry about birth control and its GREAT! No pills, no shots, no rings, no condoms.

Edited to add--No period!! My period has pretty much gone away completely. About once a month a get the PMS-type feeling, but no period actually shows up. :)

Other types of birth control besides the pills are depo (which you said you didn't want to go on), Neuva Ring, which is a ring that goes inside your vagina for three weeks, and you take it out for one week to have your period, then you put new ring in after that week. It's very nice to have to not remember to take a pill everyday, but you do have to remember to take it out every 3 weeks. There's the Ohtro Evra Patch. I don't know much information about this, but it's a patch that goes on your body. I heard conflicting stories about this method. Then the IUD which is recommended for women in serious relationships. The IUD is very painful to have it put in (I just rencetly had it inserted a week ago). But it's good for up to 5 years (Mirena) or 10 years (copper). I have the Mirena. I don't have much advice to offer on this since I just had it put in a week ago. So far it's just mild cramps, really painful cramps, and spotting and a little bleeding. My boyfriend feels safer and more comfortable with this method.
