I think they get pickier because they can. They've been around, played the game, know the end result, and make wiser and more careful decisions.

I think people in general do not get pickier but instead know what they are looking for. After a grueling experience of dating, some just hone their skills to know what they are looking for, before when you were younger you may have only looked for looks which are only skin deep. But even then if the person was attractive they may have had a personality totally different from their own.
So after a while you just know what you are looking for and stick with it.
Maybe people are pickier when they are younger as they think they can get the world. But in reality majority of the time they won't get what they want and over time learn to be realistic.

some men tend to be much pickier when they choose their gf when they get a little older...sometimes they tend to compare which of the following girls he had already met has most of the qualities that they like on a girl...they think on the long-term basis insted of the short-term one;p

Older guys as well as girls are more picky because they know what they like. Think of it as two brothers in a ice cream shop. The younger one has never been there before and wants a sample of each flavor. The older one is a regular and knows all the flavors he likes and which flavor will always be his favorite.
